Yet the Malaysian pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong capped a magical fairy-tale run in the Asian Games with a gold medal – ending an agonising 36-year wait for the nation.

And they did it in style, blowing favourites and eighth seeds Alvent Yulianto-Luluk Hadiyanto off the court in straight sets 21-13, 21-14 to give Malaysia the men’s doubles gold
