AC Milan 2 - 1 Liverpool

Athens seems to have a magical resonance for AC Milan as the media in Greece reflect on the Serie A side's UEFA Champions League success last night.

Lucky charm
Milan celebrated their seventh European Champion Clubs' Cup in the Greek capital following a 2-1 victory over Liverpool FC at the OACA Spyro Louis Stadium, having won their fifth in the same venue in 1993/94 - 4-0 against FC Barcelona. With luck playing a part in Filippo Inzaghi's deflected opener, Athens worked its magic again.

Local angle

The Kathimerini newspaper wrote: "Milan are grateful to hospitable Athens which - for the second time in 13 years - brought luck to the newly-crowned European champions." However, bearing in mind the painful defeat Liverpool inflicted on Milan in the 2005 showpiece, the paper gave the Italian club credit for their triumph, writing: "Milan took brilliant revenge for the lost final in Istanbul." Goal News shared that sense of joy in Milan's coronation, and in Athens's success by association with the Serie A giants, writing: "The seventh wonder. Milan are Europe's greatest side of the last 20 years. Athens was kind to Milan for a second time." Filathos added: "Milan are living their myth. For the seventh time the great Milan are crowned Europe's best."

'One and a half goals'
Inzaghi's opener came via an Andrea Pirlo free-kick which struck the 33-year-old en route to goal, wrong-footing Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina. Derby Sports was not quite sure it qualified as an Inzaghi score, but praised him nonetheless. "Inzaghi was super and scored one and a half goals," it wrote, while noting that "Liverpool were the better side on the night". With no serious crowd disturbances being reported in the early editions, the Greek capital could look back on a happy night under the footballing spotlight. "A magical evening in Athens," wrote Ta Nea, paying a final tribute to Rossoneri veterans Inzaghi and Paolo Maldini: "The old guard of Milan finished off Liverpool's youngsters."

Inzaghi, Maldini... you all still the best... !!!

Nicol and Grinham to resume rivalry in the Malaysian Open

2007-05-09

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's Nicol David and Australia's Natalie Grinham are expected to renew their rivalry for world squash supremacy at the CIMB Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur from June 27-30.
The top two ranked female players in the world have opted to take a break from the professional circuit after the Seoul City Open two weeks ago.
The Women's International Squash Players Association (Wispa) executive director, Andrew Shelley, said in an email: “Unless anything big comes up for both players, the next event for them will be the Malaysian Open.
“The next two tournaments – Hurghada Open in Cairo (which started yesterday) and the Texas Open – have not attracted the top women's players.”
Nicol and Grinham share the honour of winning three titles each in the six major tournaments held thus far this year.
Nicol won the KL Open, Kuwait Open and Qatar Classic titles while Grinham emerged victorious at the Apawamis Open in New York, Greenwich Open and Seoul City Open.
Both players came up against each other in the final of four of the tournaments – in KL, Kuwait, Qatar, Seoul – and Nicol hold a 3-1 advantage.
Nicol is expected to return to the professional circuit to defend her Penang Open title from June 18-23 before heading to KL for the Malaysian Open.
The two-time world champion will also be defending the Malaysian Open title.
However, her next assignment will be a promotional tour of South America, which starts at the end of this month.
The ninth edition of the Tour scheduled for May 30-June 10 will visit three countries – Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
It will be the fourth time that Nicol will go on the Tour after 2002 (Sarawak, Brunei), 2003 (Beijing) and last year (Estonia and Norway).
The other players selected for the Tour are Australians Rachael Grinham, the current world number three, and former world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald.
The Tour will again feature exhibitions, clinics, press conferences and meetings with sports bodies in Buenos Aires and Montevideo before a final leg in Santiago.
This is just getting better and better.....Nicol, keep up the good work and enjoy every tiny bit of fun you gonna to have ..... cheers..

FA of Malaysia bow to pressure

2007-05-07

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) have caved in to pressure from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and ruled Manchester United out of playing in the country in July, throwing their Asian tour into chaos.

The decision yesterday came as FIFA president Sepp Blatter called for the newly-crowned Premier League champions to show some respect, adding that he was liaising with the Football Association to get United to change their plans.

“You are welcome but please come at a time that is acceptable to the whole football family,” Blatter said on the sidelines of the AFC Congress here.

“As FIFA president I appeal for your solidarity. If a big club is touring, we appeal for a minimum of respect when they plan to travel to the region when the Asian Cup is being played.”
FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah joined AFC president Mohamed Bin Hammam in calling for United’s entire pre-season commercial tour to be called off.
United are also due to play in Macau, Japan and South Korea.

“If they want to come (to Malaysia) during that time they can’t,” Tengku Abdullah said.

“The sanction has not been given by the AFC and we have to follow it. Manchester United cannot come to Malaysia during the Asian Cup. They will have to rearrange their schedule.”
Hammam on Monday slammed United as “disrespectful” for scheduling a tour during the Asian Cup Finals being held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam from July 7-29.

He suggested FAM could face disciplinary action if they allowed United to play in Kuala Lumpur on July 27, saying each association hosting matches had signed guarantees not to hold any other games when the Cup was on.

His fear is that a tour by such a big club will divert attention from the Asian Cup in a part of the world where English Premier League is hugely popular.

“It is bad news for the fans but it is the feeling of the family of Asia,” said Tengku Abdullah.

“By the look of it the Asian Cup will have to take precedence. We all have to support Mr Hammam’s call for Manchester United not to come to Asia at all during the Asian Cup. The feeling is that they have to reschedule.”

It was clearly a decision taken reluctantly with the FAM general secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad separately spelling out what he thought.

“As a Malaysian I’m surprised. It is out of tune for people to dictate to us how we celebrate our 50 years of independence,” he said, referring to the United game, which is also part of the “Visit Malaysia 2007” campaign.

Alex Ferguson’s side enjoy huge support in Malaysia and the region and the club see Asia as a major market for their merchandise.

Said Blatter: “I think this is a question of solidarity and one of respect. Shall football only be about business?”

And Hammam, when asked what message he had for United fans disappointed by any cancellation or rescheduling, said: “I would say Asia for Asians.”

United plan to kick off their tour against J-League champions Urawa Red Diamonds on July 17 in Saitama before travelling to Seoul to play FC Seoul on July 20. The team are then due to head to Macau for a match against Shenzhen on July 23 before ending the tour in KL on July 27 against a Malaysian XI.

Malaysia were part of the schedule primarily because low-cost carrier AirAsia are one of United’s key sponsors. – AFP, Reuters

BULL Shit Mr. Hamman, even if the Man Utd is not in town, I will still not going to catch your ASIAN CUP for once in my lifetime, you know why... because your football sucks and to the respect of all foot ball fans......I am only here cursing Mr. Hamman disccusion over banning Sir Alex to come over with his team because he is worrying for poor ticket sales. (He some more dare to comment that football shouldnt be all about money) Mr. Hamman, you should go back to your house and sit on the toilet bowl and keep pang sai la ......

Back on top...Man U first Premier title since 2003

2007-05-09
Chelsea draw gives Man U first Premier title since 2003

LONDON (AP) -- Manchester United won its first Premier League title since 2003 on Sunday without kicking a ball because Chelsea was held to a 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

Chelsea needed to win to keep the title race alive, but Gilberto Silva scored from a penalty kick in the 43rd minute after midfielder Julio Baptista was brought down by Khalid Boulahrouz. The Chelsea defender was then sent off.

Michael Essien leveled in the 70th minute for Chelsea, beating Arsenal defender William Gallas with a glancing header that got past goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Chelsea outplayed Arsenal in the second half, and had several chances to win the match.

Chelsea had been trying to win its third straight Premier League title. The last club to do that was Manchester United from 1999-2001.

"I have to say that maybe I'm prouder today than when I was champion," Chelsea said Jose Mourinho said. "My players are heroes. All season, against absolutely everything, they did brilliantly."

United has now won the English title nine times since the Premier League was formed in 1992 -- all under the leadership of manager Alex Ferguson, who took over the club in November 1986. United has also won seven other English titles.

"It's a fantastic day for the club and the supporters," said Ferguson, ....

I still have to say this... bravo.. BRAVO ....

Blues draw hands United title

2007-05-07

Relieved Fergie celebrates 'special' title win

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was 'in agony' watching the end of Chelsea's 1-1 draw at Arsenal which confirmed Manchester United as Barclays Premiership champions.

United have a seven-point lead over second-placed Chelsea with two games remaining after they beat Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday and Jose Mourinho's side could only draw in north London. It means Ferguson can take his team to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night having already reclaimed the title from the Blues, who had won it for the last two seasons. There were few chances at the Emirates Stadium today before Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz was shown a red card for hauling down Julio Baptista on 42 minutes and Gilberto converted the resulting penalty. Michael Essien's close-range header with 20 minutes left gave the Blues brief hope - but a draw was not enough and United were champions again for the first time since 2003, their ninth Premiership crown

I am poundin all the time till the first goal scored in by Gilberto...and then the red card shown...then the rest is history.....

I am proud of the resistances put in by Sir Alex Ferguson against the power of wealth. He does prove it all, money and power doesn't means winning for sure.... Bravo....

Liverpool and Milan meet again, again in 2007

When Liverpool FC renew ties with AC Milan on 23 May in Athens it will be the fifth time that two clubs have faced each other in more than one European Champion Clubs' Cup final.

Memories of Istanbul
Liverpool, who eliminated Chelsea FC on penalties on Tuesday, 24 hours before Milan brushed aside Manchester United FC in their semi-final, were the winners when the teams met in Istanbul in 2005. On what was an unforgettable night for the Reds, they overturned a 3-0 half-time deficit and eventually triumphed on penalties to lift the European Cup for the fifth time. Should they also prevail at the Olympic Stadium in three weeks' time, the Anfield side would join the Rossoneri on six successes.

Di Stéfano feat
Real Madrid CF stand alone with nine victories, two of them coming against Stade de Reims Champagne - in the inaugural showpiece in Paris in 1956 and in Stuttgart three years later. During the course of those victories, Alfredo Di Stéfano became the only player to score against the same club in two finals – a feat that could be matched by Milan's Paolo Maldini or Liverpool midfielders Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso in the Greek capital.

Family honours
Maldini's father Cesare was part of the Milan team that overcame SL Benfica 2-1 at Wembley in 1963, while Paolo played in the 1-0 defeat of the Lisbon giants in Vienna in 1990. The central defender, now 38, also featured in the 1-0 1995 loss to AFC Ajax, as the Dutch club made amends for their 4-1 final defeat by Milan in Madrid in 1969. The only other sides to square off in more than one final are Ajax and Juventus – the Amsterdam outfit winning the 1973 finale in Belgrade 1-0, before the Bianconeri exacted revenge in Rome in 1996 with a 4-2 success on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Its all deja vu again ... and hard to believe, it just 2 years only for them to meet again... but in my heart I wish that the Milan can show their stipes to the Liverpool.... hahaa...
